Which Toothpastes Are The Best?

shutterstock_72848476Having good oral care is important for the care of the rest of your body. Many people may not know this, but if you have poor oral health, other areas of your body are affected, like your bones, your brain, and your heart. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily are an excellent way in making sure you stay on top of your oral health, but a lot of people may be confused as to which toothpastes are the best for them. The doctors at El Reno Family Dentistry are dedicated to making sure their patients stay as informed as possible, even down to the types of toothpastes they use in order to achieve excellent oral health.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing a toothpaste is making sure the toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride is a natural mineral that has been shown to significantly decrease the odds of tooth decay over the past fifty years. The bacteria in your mouth thrive on the leftover sugars and starches that reside in your smile after eating, and fluoride helps fight against the acid released when that happens. Fluoride is a key component is strengthening your tooth enamel, and it can reverse the early stages of damage caused by acid by replenishing minerals your smile.

Another important thing to keep in mind when choosing a toothpaste is to find one that controls tartar. Tartar is hardened plaque, a bacterial layer. If tartar is not removed promptly and properly, it has the potential to lead to gum disease. Also, some tartar control toothpastes contain triclosan, an antibiotic that kills some of the bacteria in your mouth. It is also important to keep in mind finding a toothpaste that’s ADA approved. This way, you know the toothpaste is safe, effective, and contains fluoride!

How To Make Brushing Teeth Fun For Kids

shutterstock_166055237Many parents may find it difficult to make oral care exciting and fun for their children. Getting your child to brush their teeth may be a hassle, every morning and night being a feat to overcome. Although some parents have come up with creative ways to make sure brushing teeth is fun, some parents still may be wondering how they can get their children to be excited about good oral care. Dr. Adam Cohlmia and Dr. Michael Kirk are avid believers in establishing good oral care routines early on, and we have some suggestions for parents who are wanting to make brushing teeth time into fun time!

One of the things parents can do to make brushing teeth time fun for their children is to join them in the fun! Brush your teeth with your children, and it will become a wonderful bonding moment between you.  Show your child how you brush your teeth, and let them mimic you. Fun toothbrushes are also a wonderful way to make oral care fun! If your child has a favorite cartoon movie or superhero, having their toothbrushes match is a wonderful way to get them excited about brushing their teeth.

Another great way to get kids excited about brushing their teeth is to have tasty toothpaste! There are many flavors of toothpastes made especially for children, helping them enjoy the experience much, much more. Making up a song is another wonderful way to get children excited about brushing their teeth. Kids usually respond more to song rather than words, so making the experience a fun, musical one is definitely a way to get the on the right track of wanting to take care of their smile. No matter how you choose to make brushing teeth a fun experience, make sure your child’s smile is the top priority, and accomplishing great oral care will be a breeze!

she seems happy...Having gapped or misaligned teeth can really put a strain on how you feel about yourself. If you are not confident in your smile, it can leak into many different areas of your life. You may find it difficult to put yourself out there, meet new people, or do simple things just to avoid the embarrassment. Thankfully, Dr. Michael Kirk understands the insecurities people may have about their smile, which is why he offers Invisalign to his patients.

When people think about braces, they may think about the traditional braces and having a mouth full of metal. Though traditional braces are an option, you may want a solution that is more discreet and accommodating to your lifestyle. That is where Invisalign comes in. At the end of the series of aligners, your smile is straight and beautiful!

Welcome the New Year with Healthy Gums

Despite what some people may think, gum disease is quite serious if not taken care of. With over 80% of the population living with some form of gum disease, chances are you could be suffering from it and may not be aware. If left untreated, gum disease can affect different parts of your body, possibly resulting in bone loss, heart disease, stroke, and many other serious situations. Thankfully, Dr. Michael Kirk and Dr. Adam Cohlmia are able to tackle your gum disease with gum disease therapy.

A couple of the ways we treat gum disease non-surgically is scaling. Scaling removes the tartar, also known as calculus, from below the gum line. We may also do a laser treatment, which attacks only the affected gum tissue, while also promoting healthy gum tissue to grow and attach to your teeth.  Root planing is another way of helping halt gum disease, as it lessens the rough areas on your teeth’s roots.

There are things you can do at home to prevent gum disease. Flossing and brushing your teeth twice daily, preferably after every meal, is a wonderful way to eliminate the bacteria from sitting in your mouth. Also, investing in an antibacterial mouthwash is a great way to erase the bacteria your tooth brush may have missed. If you cannot brush your teeth after every meal, chewing gum is a great option, as it catches food particles, not allowing them to make your gums their new home.

If you feel as though our Drs. Kirk and Cohlmia are able to help you with the needs of your gums, make an appointment at our El Reno office, and we’d be more than willing to assist you on your journey to dental excellence!

Start 2014 with a New Smile with Porcelain Veneers

For a lot of us, it is hard to believe that 2013 is coming to an end and 2014 is fast approaching. With millions of people already making their resolutions lists, here at El Reno Family Dentistry, we think your teeth should be a top priority for the upcoming New Year. Why not welcome the New Year with a new smile using porcelain veneers or Lumineers? A wonderful way to change your smile for the better, let our experienced doctors and team help you welcome 2014 with a bang!

Your journey to getting porcelain veneers starts with a consultation with our dentists. They will be able to evaluate the current state of your teeth, ask you about your long term goals regarding your smile, and they will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may have. If you are a candidate, our doctors will make impressions of your teeth. With those impressions, the dental lab is able to create your custom veneers.

When the time comes to apply your porcelain veneers, your natural tooth is prepared, removing a little bit of the enamel to make room for the veneers. Your veneer surrounds your natural tooth, and is made permanent with resin cement. If taken care of, your veneers can last for up to 10 years!

If you want another option, there are Lumineers brand veneers. With Lumineers, there is little to no tooth preparation. There are no shots or drills, which is great for those who have phobias when it comes to the dentist. With proper care, Lumineers can last up to 20 years! Definitely a great investment in the long run.

One of the wonderful benefits to porcelain veneers and Lumineers is the fact they look like your natural tooth! Like a lot of people who have any cosmetic work done, they may not want the work to be obvious and apparent, and with veneers and Lumineers, it allows you to look natural while also improving your confidence. They are also stain resistant, so you’re sure to have your smile pearly white at all times! You will be able to join your friends in a laugh and even have the bravery to make a joke yourself, knowing your smile is perfect! After working so hard in 2013, we think you and your smile deserve to kick off 2014 the best way possible.

If you’d like to set up an appointment, call us today at El Reno Family Dentistry. Our office is located in El Reno and serves patients from El Reno, Yukon, Minco, Calumet, Hinton, and other communities in the Canadian County.

Enhance Your Smile with Teeth Whitening in El Reno

Are you interested in teeth whitening but have been putting it off because of the risk of discomfort or the time commitment you think it will take? At El Reno Family Dentistry, we’re pleased to introduce our new and improved in-office power whitening treatments.

There are a variety of teeth whitening solutions available, both over the counter and from our office. We are excited to introduce in-office power whitening. This whitening method is special because it has an uptake of fluoride that helps to decrease the temporary and prolonged sensitivity you might experience after other whitening treatments. This helps to make the whitening process even easier and more comfortable than ever before. The treatment takes an hour and will leave your teeth anywhere from two up to seven shades brighter. Everyone’s smile has different stains so results aren’t the same for everyone.

If power whitening isn’t the right solution for your smile, we also offer take-home and laser teeth whitening solutions. Additionally, if you have tough stains or want permanent results, porcelain veneers may prove to be a better choice for your smile. We can help find the right solution so you can achieve the dazzling smile you deserve. If you’d like to learn more about in-office power whitening or want to schedule your appointment, just give us a call.

The Best and Worst Foods for a Healthy Smile

Healthy eating
goes for more than just your body. It’s important to consider your smile when making your food choices. Certain foods can increase your risk of decay, while certain foods can help to protect your smile. At El Reno Family Dentistry, we want to inform our patients of these important food facts.

If you’re going to eat foods that contain a lot of sugar, it is best to eat them with your meal instead of as a snack. At meals, you produce more saliva than at other times, which helps to neutralize the acid and provide your smile a little more protection.

Tea is a better beverage choice than carbonated sodas, which contain a lot of sugar than can erode the enamel on your teeth. Both green and black teas contain polyphenols that interact with bacteria in plaque, helping to kill or at least prevent them from producing acid that can harm your teeth.

Fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber are also a great smile choice. Fiber helps to stimulate saliva production as well as help to clean your mouth. Saliva helps to neutralize acids in your mouth and stop them from harming your smile.

Your smile health can be impacted by the foods you’re eating and how they’re eating them. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll see how these simple tips can help to improve your smile. If you have any questions or want to know more, please give us a call.
