The color of your hair, the shade of\nyour eyes, and even the shape of your earlobes is all written into your DNA.\nBut what about your teeth? Do genetics play a big role when it comes to them as\nwell? If so, is it possible for bad teeth to actually run in families? This is\na longstanding myth that your dentist has heard countless times before, but\nfortunately, when it comes to your pearly whites, genetics aren\u2019t actually as\nimportant as you might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Genetics Affect Your Smile <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, your teeth aren\u2019t <em>completely <\/em>free from the influence of genetics. Traits like the\nstrength of enamel and the presence of oral bacteria can be passed down from\nparent to child. Factors tied to the development and spacing of the teeth are\nhereditary as well, including the size of the jaw or if there is any crowding.\nIt\u2019s true that all of these can make someone more susceptible than average to\ngetting cavities and gum disease, but you\u2019re probably already familiar with\neverything you need to overcome whatever dental genetics you might have. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Lifestyle Matters More<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In truth, the way you treat your teeth day in and day out\nhas <em>much <\/em>more of an influence on your\noral health than anything found in your genetic code. Daily brushing with a\nfluoridated toothpaste and flossing can keep decay away even if a person\u2019s\nenamel is inherently weak, and these practices can largely prevent gum disease\nas well. And for the alignment of the teeth, any issues can easily be corrected\nwith orthodontics, and for children, they can sometimes be avoided altogether\nif they receive early-age dental care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of which, how often you visit a dentist really\nmatters as well. Routine preventive care is essential to discovering problems\nearly so they can be treated before they cause serious damage. All in all,\nregular checkups and cleanings are much more important than your genetics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diet really matters as well, as one that is rich in sugary\nfoods and beverages will inevitably lead to more cavities and associated dental\nissues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is that if it seems like bad teeth are running\nthrough a family, it\u2019s more likely because harmful <em>habits<\/em> have been passed down, not faulty genetics. Parents who\ndon\u2019t brush\/floss, consume a lot of sugar, or go to the dentist will inevitably\nhave children who follow suit, and they\u2019ll experience the same consequences as\na result. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the End, It\u2019s Up To You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what kind of teeth are in your family tree, the\nquality of your (and your children\u2019s) smile is ultimately in your control. This\nis great news!
