As fun as it is being a kid during the summer, it\u2019s also\nenjoyable being a parent. It\u2019s just so nice to see your children relax and\nspend more time outdoors being physically active, but there is one thing that\ncan definitely put a damper on all the summer fun\u2014cavities<\/em>. Children actually tend to develop tooth decay more <\/em>this time of the year than others\ndue to a variety of reasons, but with these 3 simple tips, you can ensure\neveryone enjoys healthy smiles all season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Stick to a Routine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As hectic as the school year can feel, most children end up\nfalling into a pretty consistent regimen every day, which hopefully includes brushing\nand flossing. This routine goes out the window in the summer, however, meaning\nit\u2019s easy for many children to fall behind on their oral hygiene. This can\nallow harmful plaque to build up on their teeth and cause decay, so be extra\nsure that your children are still brushing two minutes two times a day and\nflossing in the evening. These few minutes will save them hours in the dental\nchair getting a problem fixed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water, Please<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sugary drinks abound when the weather gets warmer, whether\nthis refers to sodas, juices, or energy drinks for the teens. Everyone tends to\ndrink more fluids as temperatures rise, and to keep your children\u2019s smile safe,\nmake sure they reach for water more often than not to quench their thirst. The\ndrinks listed above not only contain the equivalent of about 20 packets of\nsugar each<\/em>, but they are acidic as\nwell, giving them a one-two punch that can damage tooth enamel surprisingly\nfast. It\u2019s OK for your child (and you as well, for that matter) to enjoy a\nsweet drink from time to time, but most of their intake should definitely be\nwater. This will keep them hydrated and their smile in great shape. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schedule Their Back-to-School Appointment Now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s always a good idea for a child to see their dentist\nbefore school starts up again so any issues can be taken care of before their\nschedule clogs up with class, homework, and daily drama. It\u2019s best to schedule\nthis appointment before the August rush as well since this is when many parents\nwill have the exact same idea. Bringing your child in for a July visit may seem\na bit early, but you\u2019ll likely have more flexibility when it comes to their\nappointment time, plus if there is a dental problem, there will be plenty of\ntime to fix it so that it\u2019s just a memory when school starts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By maintaining good oral hygiene, drinking lots of water,\nand visiting their dentist, your child will have one less thing to hold them\nback from their summer fun. Of course, as a parent, one of the best things you\ncan do is take great care of your own teeth in order to set a good example.\nThat way, your entire household can have smiles as bright as the sun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
